Yes, Incontinence Affects Men Too!

Did you know that as men age the normal act of urinating can get harder, especially if you have prostate issues. Prostate surgery leaves men extremely vulnerable to leakage when they sneeze, cough or even stand up after sitting.

In most cases urinary incontinence means a slight dribble as you experience involuntary or accidental loss of urine from the bladder. It's important to know there are two common types of incontinence, stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

The usual causes of urge incontinence in men are involuntary contractions of the bladders muscles. This is better known as having an overactive bladder. In men, this can sometimes be from an enlarged prostate. Most men notice that there are triggers that set off urge incontinence. These triggers can be from a cold room, standing after sitting for a long period of time or even hearing running water. If you can identify your triggers, its best to try to avoid them if possible. For example, if standing after sitting causes incontinence, try sitting for shorter periods of time.

Stress incontinence on the other hand happens from sneezing, coughing or lifting an object. In men, this is usually from problems with the sphincter muscles that seal off the bladder. Damage after prostate surgery or radiation treatment of prostate cancer can cause this.

Behavioral changes have been known to help:

1. Avoid Beverages such a coffee, tea, soda and alcohol

2. Don't Smoke

3. Create a bathroom schedule

4. Lose weight if needed.
